In the moonlight, the fox sneaks towards the farm, hoping to steal a chicken or two. But he's forgotten about the old Tomten who guards the farm …

This is a classic picture book story of a watchful gnome from the bestselling author of Pippi Longstocking.

Reviews

'A beautifully illustrated tale adapted from an old Swedish poem. The Tomten, who looks after the farm at night, meets a hungry fox and agrees to share his supper with him if the fox promises to leave the hens alone. A very gentle, friendly story. It is refreshing that he understands that the fox is hungry and needs to eat -- rather than the 'nasty fox' approach. The children I have read this to loved it.'
-- Hilary Woolf with Isaac (age 5), Education Otherwise, April 2005

About the Author(s)

Astrid Lindgren is a famous Swedish writer of children's books, whose works renewed children's literature in Sweden and in Scandinavia. Lindgren's best-known characters are independent and unconventional, such as the untidy Pippi Longstocking, Karlsson, and Emil with his pranks. She wrote many books for children and received many awards for her work, including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Pippi Longstocking in 1973; the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1958; and the International Book Award from UNESCO in 1993.
