Johannes Rohen is known as the father of functional anatomy, and his anatomy books are used by medical students around the world. In this book, he has turned his attention to human society, applying his functional approach developed over decades of meditating on the human organism.

The result is a holistic yet highly differentiated view of human society as a dynamic organism that takes our understanding of social issues to a deeper level of insight. He sees the same threefold structure at work in human society as he sees in the human organism.

This is a stimulating and challenging book from a renowned master.

About the Author(s)

Johannes W. Rohen (b. 1921) studied medicine at the universities of Cologne, Freiburg, Breslau, Danzig, and finally Tübingen, where he was awarded his doctorate in 1946. Tübingen was also where he began his scientific career, which focused on researching the physiology of the eye, especially as it relates to the problem of glaucoma. In 1953 he qualified as a lecturer at the University of Mainz in the fields of anatomy and embryology. He accepted the Benninghoff Chair of Anatomy at the University of Marburg/Lahn in 1964 and a call to the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1974. He retired in 1989. Professor Rohen is the author of many textbooks, which reflect his standing as one of the founders of functional anatomy.
