The personal growth, or self-help, industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. But with so much advice available on a multitude of bodily, mental, emotional and spiritual processes that all claim to improve your quality of life, how can you decide which is right for you?

Patricia Sherwood analyses pathways such as counselling, drugs, psychics and meditation. Her approach is based on psychological theories and research as well as Rudolf Steiner's holistic model of the human being and the thresholds of consciousness. In assessing each pathway, she looks at individual case studies and asks questions such as 'Am I more present in my daily life: in body, mind and spirit?' and 'Am I empowered to shape my destiny?' before concluding the positive and negative outcomes of each.

This is a helpful and practical book for anyone wanting to consider a variety of options in the often confusing world of self-help.

Dr Patricia Sherwood is Director of Sophia College in Australia which trains in anthroposophically based counselling and psychotherapy. She has spent 35 years in the university sector and is the author of several books including Holistic Counselling: a New Vision for Mental Health; Emotional Literacy: the Heart of Classroom Management; The Healing Art of Clay Therapy and Infertility to Fertility.
