Over time, as a storyteller and as an author who plays with old tales to inspire my new stories, I\u2019ve discovered connections between the Scottish tales I work with most, and very close cousins of those stories. Why do we call them Celtic tales? What does \u2018Celtic\u2019 mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think for a moment. What does <strong><em>Celtic<\/em> <\/strong>mean to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fancy swirly brooches with animal heads?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A football team (pronounced with a S not a K)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warriors fighting the Romans?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A way of identifying your ancestry?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Languages with a similar root?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What else?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Celtic\u2019 means many different things to people nowadays, and has meant different things in previous centuries and millennia too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/celtic-border.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"73\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/celtic-border.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/celtic-border.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/celtic-border-300x37.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s my understanding of the tangled and hotly debated history of the word \u2018Celtic\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first people to use the word \u2018Celt\u2019 (or Keltoi) were ancient Greeks and Romans, to describe tribes in what are now Germany and France. However, there is little or no evidence those tribespeople called themselves Celts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a thousand years later, there was a theory (since mostly debunked) that the folk described as Celts had been forced to the northwestern coastal edges of Europe. So people studying languages in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century revived the word \u2018Celtic\u2019 to describe the linked languages spoken on and near that coast: Irish and Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Manx, Cornish, Breton. However, there is little or no evidence these were the languages spoken by the people called Celts in ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite that lack of real evidence, having the word \u2018Celtic\u2019 (connected with fancy jewellery and with warriors who took on Roman legions) describing your language was quite cool. So people speaking those languages embraced the description, and now the word \u2018Celtic\u2019 is used for much more than languages. It\u2019s used for cultures. For a sense of belonging, especially if your family has moved elsewhere. And for stories\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, when we say \u2018Celtic tales\u2019 in this collection, we mean stories that have been told for many generations, in the lands where languages described as Celtic are now or have recently been spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/books\/9781782509622\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/discoverkelpies.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/discoverkelpies.co.uk\/kelpies\/3dlarge\/9781782509622.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90274\" style=\"width:198px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>And what stories they are! Waterhorses (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wv6NhdtnPVk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from the Isle of Man &#8211; watch me tell my version in this video<\/a>), tricky fairies (from Brittany), dragons (from Wales), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DPTYH8wAfRX\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=Mnh3dW41NHR3M3Q3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">giants<\/a> (from Ireland), piskies (from Cornwall), changelings (from Scotland) and shapeshifters from as many places as possible.
