Over rugged mountains and through green glens, trees grew in abundance: mighty oak and hardy pine, cedar and beech, aspen and ancient yew, juniper and rowan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forest near the Hill of Kinnoull gave shelter to all manner of life \u2013 a home for bears and wolves and wildcats, for roe deer and red deer. It was also home to Broca, the woodcutter\u2019s daughter. Broca was a sturdy and talented lass. She chopped firewood, split kindling, and could whittle and carve the most amazing wooden creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1-1024x674.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1-1024x674.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-1.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca had lived her whole life in the woods, and so when she opened their hut door one bright sunny morning, she was quick to sense a change in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooks like it\u2019s going to be another lovely day,\u201d said her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so,\u201d Broca replied, wrinkling her nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s up, lass?\u201d Her father came to stand beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca knew the smells of the forest: the tang of pine, the scent of fir, the aroma of applewood. What was wafting on the wind was none of these. She frowned, then said: \u201cSomething is burning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forest fires are very dangerous. Thus the woods already had firebreaks and water channels, and piles of long-handled brooms to beat down smouldering sparks and embers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca hurried with her father to the village meeting place, where people had collected brooms and buckets of water. They moved swiftly towards a plume of smoke that was rising into the sky. As they drew nearer, ahead of them, around the base of a tree, flames were burning with a strange luminous glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca\u2019s father spoke fearfully. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen it before myself, but that could be dragon-fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat would cause it?\u201d one of the villagers asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA dragon,\u201d Broca replied. \u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2-1024x331.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7855\" style=\"object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2-1024x331.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2-300x97.png 300w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2-768x248.png 768w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-2.png 1337w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t get dragons in these parts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do now,\u201d said Broca, and pointed to the top of a massive oak tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looming above the branches was a huge dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ground shuddered as the beast came thundering straight at them. Yellow eyes glared from below hooded lids, and its snarling jaws were agape, revealing rows of jagged teeth. The dragon\u2019s black tongue snaked out, and with it a scarlet scorching burst of flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca yanked on her father\u2019s arm and dragged him into a nearby bush. Everyone else dropped their buckets and brooms and ran home in terror, shrieking and yelling. The dragon crashed after them, set fire to a few barns, snatched some haystacks to munch, then lolloped off in the direction of Kinnoull Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca and her father watched as the dragon made for a deep cave in the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to make a den for itself,\u201d Broca\u2019s father said in a worried voice. \u201cIt intends to stay in Kinnoull.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cForever?\u201d Broca asked him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce the beast settles in, it\u2019ll take a miracle to move it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That evening the villagers planned a hunting party to slay the dragon. But Broca had been close enough to the creature to see that its hide was well protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpears and arrows will bounce off its scales,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have never failed yet to bring down a wild beast,\u201d the hunters replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always a first time,\u201d said Broca. \u201cI hope you can run fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the hunters <em>could <\/em>run fast, for their weapons bounced off the dragon and they were forced to retreat rapidly from Kinnoull Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis time we\u2019ll trap it with our nets,\u201d they said at the next meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Broca had seen the dragon\u2019s sharp claws, great jaws and strong teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNets will be torn to pieces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have never failed yet to trap a wild beast,\u201d the hunters replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always a first time,\u201d said Broca. \u201cI hope you can run really fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the hunters <em>could <\/em>run really fast, for the dragon tore their trapping nets and rampaged about, gathering up hens and sheep and geese and grain before tottering back to its den.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3-1024x294.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3-1024x294.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3-768x221.png 768w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-3.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the third meeting the hunters resolved to build a high barricade to encircle the village and trust that the dragon would shortly move on somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they said this, Broca recalled the words of her father: <em>Once the beast settles in, it\u2019ll take a miracle to move it out.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Broca had heard tell of a holy man named Serf who lived a few miles away in Dunning and was noted for his praying and preaching. There had been talk that this man might even be a saint who could work miracles. But when Broca mentioned asking the holy man for assistance, nobody paid any attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, walking home with her father, Broca said, \u201cApart from improving the running skills of our hunters, we are no further forwards in solving the dragon problem. I, myself, will find the holy man, Serf, and bring him to Kinnoull.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are a fine capable lass, Broca,\u201d said her father, laying his hand on her shoulder. \u201cYou go, and I\u2019ll help build the barricade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the following morning Broca set out on the road to Dunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:39% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"432\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-4-432x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7857 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-4-432x1024.png 432w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-4-127x300.png 127w, https:\/\/www.florisbooks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Scotland_Spread-4.png 451w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In his kitchen garden, the holy man, Serf, listened to Broca and said that he\u2019d be happy to help get rid of the dragon who was robbing and terrorising the village of Kinnoull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll say a special prayer each morning,\u201d Serf promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that will be enough,\u201d said Broca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt noon too, then,\u201d said Serf. \u201cThat should do it. Don\u2019t you agree?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Broca replied. This conversation wasn\u2019t going the way she\u2019d expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow about morning, noon and night?\u201d suggested Serf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was hoping that you\u2019d come to Kinnoull and deal with it in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs it a big dragon?\u201d Serf asked.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Enormous<\/em>,\u201d said Broca, for she was a truthful lass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh dear,\u201d said Serf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought this was what you did. Fixing problems for folk, working miracles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy role is providing leadership \u2013 guiding people on the path of goodness by example.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you smite the dragon, that would provide leadership,\u201d said Broca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSmite!\u201d Serf exclaimed. \u201cDo we need to actually kill it? Usually I just help crops grow, settle arguments and cure minor ailments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d be famous,\u201d said Broca, \u201cpart of Scotland\u2019s history: how Serf bravely smote the loathsome beast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Serf sighed. \u201cI suppose I could come and use gentle persuasion. Within every living creature is some tenderness \u2013 a soft spot.\u201d He wandered over to his rows of vegetables, murmuring to them to behave while he was gone, and not bicker amongst themselves as to who had the best position in the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was Broca\u2019s turn to say, \u201cOh dear.\u201d Serf\u2019s manner did not bode well for dragon-slaying, but at least the holy man was coming to Kinnoull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they reached the Hill of Kinnoull, Broca was glad to see the barricade was secure and the village was untouched. However, all the land around it was a trail of ruin and destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat a mess!\u201d Serf tutted. \u201cThe poor creature must be awfully distressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCouldn\u2019t you simply wave your hands and make this dragon go away?\u201d asked Broca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t perform a miracle by snapping my fingers,\u201d said Serf. He paused, snapped his fingers, then when nothing happened, he went on, \u201cI\u2019ll visit its den, speak a few words to the dragon and pray over it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broca did not think this was in any way a smart plan.
